CORE PRINCIPLES

DISCOVERY

D for Discovery

Explore the toothbrush with the child by holding it, touching it, and playing with it under supervision. Choose a colorful toothbrush or one with a cartoon character to make it more interesting. Toothpaste can be introduced later in the process (see Exercise 2) allowing the child to acclimate to one element at a time.

EXEMPLE / EDUCATION

E for Example / Education

Show the child how the toothbrush is used. You could do this by brushing your teeth in front of them, using a plastic dentist playset, or demonstrating on their favorite toy (baby doll, stuffed animal, etc.). Show the importance of opening wide to reach all the teeth properly.

TAKE TURNS

T for Take Turns

Play a game where you take turns brushing your teeth. You do it first, then it's the child's turn. Depending on their level of autonomy, you can do it for them or let them do it themselves. Count the seconds, and add more seconds in subsequent sessions as the child becomes more comfortable

ENACTMENT

E for Enactment

The child brushes their teeth alone or has their teeth brushed by an adult. Remember to count! Start with a few seconds and gradually increase the brushing time from one session to the next as the child becomes more comfortable. This not only helps prepare for the dentist but also establishes a good tooth brushing routine at home! :) If the child moves during the countdown, simply stop the exercise. Reiterate the rules (countdown of x, without moving), and start again. If needed, offer a break and resume afterward.
