The DETE method described below is designed to guide the exercises presented in the following sections. It facilitates the child's acclimating to different dental practices in a progressive and safe manner.

DISCOVERY

Help the child explore and touch the dental tools to become familiar with them. This can begin with touching the tools with the hand and fingers, and then gradually moving towards the face and mouth.

EXAMPLE / EDUCATION

E for Example / Education

Show the child how the equipment is used by demonstrating it on yourself, on a toy (e.g., doll, stuffed animal, favorite toy), or on someone else (e.g., sibling, dad, etc.).

TAKE TURNS

T for Take Turns

Practice the exercises in turns. The child and the adult take turns performing the activity.
